What Are Eastern Subterranean Termites?

Eastern subterranean termites (Reticulitermes flavipes) are North America’s most widespread termite species. These termites live in large underground colonies and travel through mud tubes to reach food sources. Their primary diet consists of wood, paper, and other cellulose-based materials.

Characteristics of Eastern Subterranean Termites:

• Typically, these termites measure 1/8 inch in length and have soft, pale bodies.
• They live underground and build mud tubes to protect themselves from open air.
• They swarm during the springtime, usually on warm, humid days after rain.
• These termites can cause extensive structural damage over time, though at a slower rate than Formosan termites.

Eastern subterranean termites are responsible for significant property damage, but their colonies tend to be smaller and grow slower than Formosan Termites.

What Are Formosan Termites?

Formosan termites (Coptotermes formosanus) are an aggressive and invasive termite species originally from Asia. They are often referred to as “super termites” due to their large colony sizes and rapid destruction capabilities. Unlike Eastern Subterranean Termites, Formosan Termites can establish aerial nests, allowing them to cause damage more quickly.

Characteristics of Formosan Termites:

• Formosan Termites are slightly larger than Eastern Subterranean Termites, typically measuring about 1/2 inch long.
• These termites can form massive colonies with millions of termites.
• They are capable of building above-ground “aerial” nests, allowing them to infest homes without soil contact.
• Swarms occur during late spring to early summer, often in the evening.
• Formosan Termites cause severe structural damage in a short period due to their aggressive feeding habits.

Because of their larger colonies and ability to nest above ground, Formosan termites pose a greater threat than Eastern Subterranean Termites. They can quickly compromise the integrity of a home if left unchecked.
